There have been controversies around nonstick coatings (often made from synthetic chemicals, i.e, Teflon) in cookware. The major concern of Teflon coating is due to some of its chemical components as it was used to contain perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).
Intensely heating your Teflon and Nonstick coated cookware to above 300 degrees Celsius or 570 degrees Fahrenheit is dangerous to your health as it can destabilise the material and release polymer toxic fumes.
When PFOA is consumed either when they are leached into the food or even the tiniest scratches on the surface, they have been linked to having increased chances of cancer and other diseases like kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid disease, low infertility and etc. Most manufacturers assumed the PFOA burns of during manufacturing but traces were found in some Nonstick-coated cookware.
An American study concluded that 98% of people in the USA had PFOA in their blood. Due to this, programs to eliminate PFOA explosure have been implemented. Nowadays, most Nonstick-coated cookware are considered safer since PFOA has not been used in production of Teflon until 2013.
