Earth Month is a global initiative that takes place in April. It is a crucial time to raise awareness on environmental issues such as climate change, carbon footprint and pollution that negatively affect not only us but the entire planet and its diverse ecosystems.
It is also increasingly important to be mindful of how we can contribute and do our part in reversing the harmful effects on our planet to conserve and preserve the natural world.
Brief History of Earth Month
Initially started as a movement that criticised the negative consumption of leaded gas by Americans brought by air pollution caused by inefficient automobiles.
It was around 1962 Rachel Carson published the book “Silent Spring” to raise awareness about the effects of air pollution on living organisms.
In 1969, A massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, caused senator Gaylor Nelson to form an organization that safeguards the environment. Earth Day was then made. However, they soon realised one day is not enough to solve environmental problems. Hence on April 4, 1970, Earth Month was made.
Today, Earth Month is considered one of the most important global events.
